The Dead Pope Society
Since the death of the Pope, the world has been in mourning. The press has been all over his death, covering it from stem to stern, leaving no leaf unturned. Yes, exploitation is everything for the press.
Meanwhile, the Catholic Church paraded the corpse around Vatican City, a freak show created in the name of God. Yes, rather than a calm and dignified funeral, the Pope got Barnum and Bailey. And there were plenty of clowns at hand, too.
In the US, the President violated protocol and the 1st Amendment by having the US flag flown at half-mast. Yes, something that had been previously reserved for American dignitaries and heroes was extended to the leader of a church.
Furthermore, world leaders spoke of the wonderful things that the Pope had achieved. They spoke about what a wonderful and caring person he was and how he had changed the Church for the better.
Talk show hosts, religious leaders and people everywhere parroted those wonderful sentiments. Repeated everywhere was his contributions to the world and how he helped bring about the downfall of communism.
Hardly a word was spoken of his immense hypocrisy and glaring failures as a human being and religious leader. Apparently, our world leaders have forgotten about these failures. Or, maybe they are just too chicken shit to actually speak truth.
So, here I am not too chicken shit to point out the terrible things about the Pope and the guilt he takes to the grave with him.
First thing I want to point out is that the Pope was the leader of the richest religious sect on the planet. They are so rich that they have their own state, despite the fact that gluttony is considered a "deadly sin".
More importantly hypocritical is that the church leaders all live in opulence while the majority of their supporters are poor and can barely afford a place to live or food to eat. Still, they ask those people for money. They get it, too.
Had the Pope been a truly great and caring man he would have changed all of that. Instead, he increased the rate of the spread of AIDS and other diseases. Even more awful is that he helped to increase the populations in poor countries, driving them further into debt and despair.
And he did that all with the edict that birth control - like condoms - was a crime against God. I guess suffering and disease and death due to over population and non-use of condoms is God's wish. How nice.
His worst crime, however, was against children. The Pope supported child molestation and rape. No, not directly, but indirectly.
Instead of "outing" those priests who were guilty of molesting children he had them relocated. Instead of having them prosecuted he had them relocated. Instead of protecting the innocence of children he allowed it to occur, unpunished.
The last word, from the Pope, on child molestation and rape, was that it was bad. Rather than issuing an edict that child molestation was a crime against God he said it was a bad thing to do.
And that, more than anything, is why the Pope should be reviled and not celebrated. The Pope, despite the good things that he accomplished, should go down in the annals of history as someone who promoted the rape of children through inaction.
Because that is just what he did.
