Hate crimes and the NEA
All the time, on the news, I see reports on "hate crimes". Our politicians and law enforcement agencies are always calling crimes against minorities and religious groups “hate crimes”. The laws are tougher on those people who are convicted of a "hate crime" than if they were just convicted of a crime.
According to this law I can beat the hell out of someone that I like and get a lesser penalty than if I hated that person. Um…I don’t understand how that makes any sense. I still beat the shit out of someone. If I kill someone because I hate their religion I get a stiffer penalty than if I just killed them to take their money. Basically, one persons murder is worse than the others. Yeah, that makes sense. But, logic is not what I wanted to talk about here. I want to talk about why "hate crimes" should be legal. It is time for society to stand up and stop the oppression of those who commit hate crimes!
Hate is a form of expression. According to the first Amendment of the US Constitution, expression is a guaranteed right. Therefore, we all have a right to hate. If hate is a form of expression, so is a "hate crime" by its very definition. So, if something is determined to be a “hate crime” then it is also a form of expression. So, it must be protected by the Constitution. In fact, committing a "hate crime" is a right! In fact, since hate is an expression "hate crimes" should be considered as an art!
Someone call the NEA - I smell government funding!
