Girlie-Men
Some folks are up in arms over Arnold Scharzeneggers use of the phrase "girlie-man" in a recent speech. Democrats claimed that it is an offense to gay men and women and they want him to apologize for it.
State Sen. Sheila Kuehl said, "It uses an image that is associated with gay men in an insulting way, and it was supposed to be an insult. That's very troubling that he would use such a homophobic way of trying to put down legislative leadership,"
Now, I read that speech and I do not recall any use of the term homosexual, gay, fag, queer or any other term that is commonly associated with gay men. Also, with the exception of the term "girlie" I saw no other reference to the weaker sex.
Now, it seems to me that if they took offense to the term that they should have been up in arms about it when it was used, very commonly, on Saturday Night Live. However, they did not.
Instead of finding it offensive when it was originally used, they decided it was offensive when used to describe their weakness at passing a budget for the state of California.
It sounds like they are selectively offended, to me.
So now, instead of focusing on getting a budget passed, these mooks are whining about Governor Scharzenegger using a "sexist" and "homophobic" term.
Now, so far as I know, the term "girlie-man" is used to describe a man who is weak and effeminate or, in more colloquial terms - a pussy. It has nothing to do with gay men and it has nothing to do with women.
What this exposes is that those who are offended by the term think that gay men are all effeminate or pussies. So, essentially, these guys are guilty of stereotyping gay men. So, who is the real homophobe, here and
Surprisingly, even gay representatives are offended by the term. This means that they are guilty of stereotyping gay men as effeminate pussies. So, if they think that gay men are effeminate pussies, is it then true that they are effeminate pussies? And, if so, how is it homophobic and why is it offensive?
It seems to me that they
are just looking for a way to get out of coming off as the louts that they
are and they are using any tactic possible and will stoop as low as it takes
to distract from the real issues at hand.
