French - an American word for futility
In a microcosm of French history, played out tonight-on HBO, Frenchman Morrade Hakkar made a bid for the middleweight title of the world when he took on the undisputed middleweight champion, Bernard Hopkins.
In typical French fashion the challenger began the fight in hasty retreat while throwing few punches and landing none. He did stand and fight, however, when he realized that the UN was not going to step in.
Sadly, for the Frenchman, his punches were on par with typical French offensive maneuvers – inept and ineffective. Nevertheless, he fought on as only a Frenchman can. He ran and he fled when attacked and only moved forward when Hopkins decided to stop attacking. Of course, he was hit and hit often.
Give a little credit to the Frenchman, though. He did not quit. His promoter made him quit, throwing in the towel for the fighter in the 8th round, thus sparing us anymore of this debacle. Morrade Hakkar did not let down his countrymen. True to his French roots, he wept like a baby after his inevitable surrender.
And there you have it. French history in an 8 round boxing match. Run a lot; fight when you have to, get hit a lot and then surrender and cry.
